Prevent

Prevention refers to the creation and implementation of plans to prevent a threatened or actual incident from occurring. Although schools have no control over some of the hazards that may impact them, they can take actions to minimize the impact of incidents. Schools cannot always control fights, bomb threats, and school shootings. However, they can take actions to reduce the likelihood of such events.

The NEMLEC STARS Team has provided the supplemental resources on this page to help local school districts formulate prevention strategies as part of their overall school safety planning.  These resources are diverse and widely ranging in their scope and include checklists, training links, school safety reports and other documents, and will assist in routine prevention strategies.    These resources also work in conjunction with, and assist in developing, the School Emergency Operations Plan (SEOP).

Prevention requires taking inventory of the potential dangers in a school and community, and identifying actions to prevent and reduce injury and property damage.
